ABSTRACT
A prospective longitudinal and descriptive study was conducted with all the elderly patients admitted to the Geriatrics Ward of the Arnaldo Milian Castro Clinical-Surgical Hospital in Santa Clara for respiratory diseases in 2011. The aim of the study was to train the geriatric patient in comprehensive respiratory rehabilitation. The sample consisted of 451 elderly people who were classified by age, sex, toxic habits, associated diseases and hospital stay. All members of the multidisciplinary team of the ward were trained, according to their functions, in respiratory physiotherapy techniques. according to their symptoms, the studied patients underwent individualized sessions from Monday to Friday, in the morning hours during 15 minutes. And they were provided explanations about the importance of continuity, by themselves and the caregiver support. Three topics were given for elderly patients and caregivers, with fixed days in the week, once the caregiver meeting was over. It was concluded that the predominant age group in the study was 70-79 years. Males were predominant. Bronchopneumonia was the respiratory illness leading to most of the admissions. The most common toxic habits were coffee and smoking. Practical and educational activities were conducted with good participation, and hospital stay was 7 to 10 days.
