ABSTRACT
The limbs amputation is one of the oldest surgical procedures in the history of mankind. With the
purpose of outline the historic evolution of amputations, it were consulted the accessible books and
journals at personal and Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Medicas y Nutricion Salvador Zubiran libraries.
Amputations have been practiced since Neolithic times for punitive, ritual and therapeutic
reasons. The control of pain, hemorrhage and sepsis, as well as improving rehabilitation techniques
and prostheses fitting and prosthetic devices had changed the present and future of the amputee.
Amputations had been performed since 40 to 45,000 years b. C., but until the 20th century has been
possible to achieve safety in its performance and many chances to reach full rehabilitation.
