ABSTRACT
Background: Pseudoaneurysms are usually caused by perforation of an artery with hematoma formation between the arterial wall and surrounding parenchyma. Flowing arterial blood creates a cavity that remains in continuity with the normal vessel and becomes lined by inflammatory cells and fibroblasts and is eventually replaced by fibrous scar tissue. The incidence of the radial artery pseudoaneurysms is very low and is generally associated with complications such as repeated punctures at the same site of the artery. The color Duplex examination provides a reliable diagnosis. Surgical treatment is recommended. Objective: We describe our approach to a radial artery pseudoaneurysm and discuss the treatment options that are available.
Material and methods: We evaluated the patient and confirmed the diagnosis with color Duplex, finally the broken pseudoaneurysm was surgically repaired and the patient was programmed for a second intervention after de emergency was corrected.
Conclusion: For preventing a pseudoaneurysm from developing it is important to concentrate meticulously on the aseptic technique and to apply adequate pressure at the end of the procedure.
