A prospective study of tympanic perforations with the use of trichloroacetic acid and rice paper as a treatment

ABSTRACT
Objective
To demonstrate that the application of trichloroacetic acid (TA ) plus
rice paper remains an option in the treatment of tympanic perforations
in patients at risk for surgery.
Material and method
In a seven-month period 16 patients were selected in the Department
of Otorhinolaryngology, Hospital General de Sonora with chronic
middle otitis. All patients who met inclusion criteria underwent
myringoplasty chemistry with two different techniques: in nine patients
were revived edges of the perforations with trichloroacetic acid; in
seven patients, trichloroacetic acid and paper patch were applied in
the area of the perforation.
Results
Eleven of the sixteen patients with perforated eardrum fully closed. In
the first group where trichloroacetic acid was used only, seven of the
nine perforations closed. In the second group, where trichloroacetic
acid and rice paper were applied, four of seven cases closed.
Conclusion
The rice paper and trichloroacetic acid are effective and safe means
of closure of the tympanic membrane in selected patients, since they
reduce the waiting list for surgery, benefiting the patient, the doctor
and hospital in time surgical, economics and risks of anesthesia and
surgery.
