ABSTRACT
Background: First cases of cerebral venous thrombosis were published by Ribes and Abercrombie in the nineteenth century, including one associated to postpartum.
Objective: To present the retrospective analysis of 912 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis.
Material and methods: A cross sectional, descriptive, retrolective and prolective study was done which emphasizes the epidemiological, clinical and radiological characteristics. We reviewed 912 patients with cerebral venous thrombosis admitted ABC Medical Center during the period January 2002 to September 2012.
Results: The diagnosis was made by brain magnetic resonance imaging in 81.7% of cases and the rest through the venous pathway tomography most affected the transverse sinus (63%). Based on the characteristics of our population we found that the risk factors are constant with previous reports: the use of contraceptives (12.4%) and thrombophilia (8.5%). sepsis and intracerebral hemorrhage were the comorbidities associated with poor prognosis.
Conclusion: Due to the wide spectrum of clinical presentation, the cerebral venous thrombosis is often confused in the first instance with other diseases so the prognosis of these patients may be influenced negatively.
