ABSTRACT
Material and methods. We evaluated in the adult male kinetic (M
eanR
esponseT
ime in s) differences during the on transient phase II O
2
pulse (PulO2 = VO
2/H
eartR
ate, mL/heartbeat; Φ
ΙΙ TRM PulO
2) among young (YG = 8, 25 ± 3, mean ± SD) and old (OG = 9, 70.9
± 5) adult men, who performed a computed test ramp cycle ergometer exercise using both legs. PulO
2máx was calculated from the
pulmonary data breath-by-breath of VO
2 and beat-by-beat of HR, and also the transient ramp Φ
II PulO
2 data was modeled using
nonlinear regression.
Results. The PulO
2máx was lower (P ‹ 0.05) in OG (13.84 ± 1.92) compared with YG (19.64 ± 2.71). There
was no significant difference (P › 0.05) in the kinetic transient ramp Φ
ΙΙ TRM PulO
2 between YG (Φ
ΙΙ TRM PulO
2 = 33.14 ±
10.74) and OG (Φ
ΙΙ TRM PulO
2 = 44.39 ± 12.47).
Conclusions. A lower PulO
2máx related with age during ramp exercise is
interpreted as a probable result of decreased stroke volume and/or a failure to increase oxygen extraction in the elderly group. The
Φ
ΙΙ TRM PulO
2 appears do not to reflect age-related differences between healthy people of average fitness or greater.
