ABSTRACT
We are exposed to two sources of radiation, natural or background
radiation which comes from cosmic space and from
other natural sources (primitive materials of our planet) and
another artificial (industrial, produced by radiological procedures,
warfare, or accidents in handling radioactive substances).
Radiobiology is the science that studies phenomena
produced in life forms following absorption of energy from
ionizing radiation. Radiological protection is a tool to manage
healthcare measures against risks produced by use of ionizing
radiation, both for persons and for the environment. The
objectives of radiological protection and safety are: prevent
recognized and predictable harmful (deterministic) effects
of ionizing radiation and limit the stochastic effects to acceptable
maximums. Our standard (NOM-229-SSA1-2002) is
based on the recommendations of the International Commission
for Radiological Protection (ICRP) of 1977. The acceptable
annual limits of radiation are: occupational 50 mSv and
public 5 mSv.
