ABSTRACT
Foreword. A high prevalence of Gestacional Diabetes Mellitus, has been observed in our population. It´s necessary to implement early
detection strategies in order to prevent and diminish obstetric and perinatal complications.
Objective. To determine the prevalence of
gestacional diabetes mellitus in our population.
Patients and methods. Our study included 260 obstetric patients who came to prenatal
control between 14 and 34 gestation weeks, from May 1st 2006-Octuber 31st 2008. These patients were given a glucose screening test
(50 g of glucose). In case of showing carbohydrate intolerance, they were further tested with an oral glucose tolerance test protocol. All
the patients were asked the following data: maternal age, pregnancy weeks at the moment of the glucose screening and at the time of the
glucose test.
Result. From the 100% of the studied patients, we detected 34 cases with gestational diabetes mellitus, 16 cases by
diagnostic screening and 18 by oral glucose tolerance test with a prevalence of 13%. Average gestational age at the time diagnosis was
by screening 24.3 weeks and by diagnosis curve 30.6 weeks and the range of maternal age with the highest prevalence was from 21 to
30 years old.
Conclusions. Our prevalence of gestational diabetes mellitus is the same as those reported by other hospital centers in
Mexico. It´s necessary to perform a glucose screening in all pregnant women as soon as the first pregnancy finishes to establish an
opportune diagnosis and treatment of gestational diabetes mellitus.
