ABSTRACT
Introduction. Hospital malnutrition is a common problem not only income but also during the hospital stay. We assessed nutrition status and prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients at the Hospital Juarez de Mexico and its relation to fasting time prior to admission and throughout their stay. Methods. We conducted a cross-sectional study, descriptive and analytical in hospital patients. A questionnaire was conducted clinical and nutritional assessment. The questionnaire included general data, primary diagnosis, comorbidity, hospital stay, fasting days and pre-hospital admission. Nutritional assessment was determined by Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and anthropometric measurements. Results. Nutrition status was evaluated in 272 patients, 254 adults and 18 paediatrics. Malnutrition was present in 13% of adult patients by Quetelet’s Index (QI) vs. 63% for the SGA. For paediatric patients 44% were malnourished by QI vs. 78% according to SGA. The weight loss percentage of the population average was 8.5%. During hospital stay patients in medical areas reported greater time of fasting and pre-hospital admission. Conclusions. The prevalence of malnutrition in hospitalized patients at the Hospital Juarez de Mexico is high. It requires raising awareness among medical and paramedical personnel to conduct a nutritional assessment to all patients admitted to the hospital unit.REFERENCES
