ABSTRACT
Introduction. The cirrhosis is a frequent suffering, with a high mortality in our country. The etiology is changed, being the first reasons: abuse of alcohol, virus of the hepatitis C and autoimmune hepatopathy. The complications are the most frequent reason of internment in the diverse services of gastroenterology.
Objective. To investigate the reasons and the most frequent complications of the cirrhosis in the Hospital Juarez of Mexico.
Material and methods. There was realized a retrospective, longitudinal and descriptive study, for which 236 processes of the year 2004 to 2006 were checked.
Results. The average of age was 55.7 years with predominance of the masculine genre, especially in the cirrhosis caused by alcohol. The most frequent reasons were alcohol (57.4%), virus of the hepatitis C (26.7%) and autoimmune hepatopathy (15.6%). The complications that prevailed were: dropsy, encephalopathy, digestive hemorrhage, spontaneous peritonitis and hepatorrenal syndrome, in this order. The reasons of mortality were: digestive hemorrhage (54%), hepatic encephalopathy (29%), spontaneous peritonitis (10%) and hepatorrenal syndrome (7.0%). The whole of deaths was 109 cases: 62.4% of the masculine sex and 37.6% of the feminine sex.
Commentary. There is needed a major number of epidemiological studies to be able to determine with major precision the prevalence of the etiology and the complications of the cirrhosis that prevails in our way. Nevertheless, these results provide an idea of the existing panorama in our country. It is necessary take more radical and effective measurements that allow the early detection and the prevention of the excessive consumption of alcohol and of the infections for virus of the hepatitis C.
