ABSTRACT
lntroduction. The permeable foramen ovale is a permanent open ing, resembling a floating membrane, the rest of the fetal circulation . Can be easily diagnosed by a transthoracic and/or transesophageal echocardiography. Objective. To determine the prevalence of permeable foramen ovale in the third year medical students of the UNAM those are rotating in the Hospital Juarez de Mexico in the period March to June 2008. Material and methods. This was a descriptive, prospective, cross, original, not experimental study. lnclusion criteria: Medical students in the third year of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM which are rotating in the Hospital Juarez de Mexico. Men and women. Age of 18-30 years. Procedure: The medical students were briefed on the study protocol, which consisted in the determination of the foramen ovale permeable by echocardiography with the Vivid 7 equipment, using agitated saline IV. lt was checked whether there is an interauricular defect, determ ine its size and any quantity of bubbles rising from the right atrium to the left. Results. Echocardiogram was performed on 37 women and 63 men (total 100 students). As for the male students was fo und in 15 and in women permeable foramen ovale was found in 17 students. For men the average age obtained was 21 years, with a median of 21 years with a mode of 21 years, with a standard deviation of l . And the women gained an average age were 20 years with a median of 20 years w ith a mode of 20 years, with a standard deviation of 1.41; 94% remain asymptomatic and 6% show symptoms, which were female. Conclusions. Paradoxical embolism through a permeable foramen ovale, especially in young patients, can be prevented with a noninvasive study such as the echocardiogram.
