ABSTRACT
Introduction. The asthma is a chronic-inflammatory lungs disease with a 7-10% prevalence, whose associated morbidity and mortality among children has increased in the last years. The prevalence and type of asthma in pediatric outpatients at a general hospital were identified.
Methods. All the pediatric outpatients of the hospital that met the inclusion criteria were included; asthma cases were identified and characterized according to the international classification of asthma, the rate and 95% confidence intervals (IC).
Results. 379 patients were evaluated, the prevalence of asthma was 4.2 % (IC 95% 2.19-6.21) the greatest proportion corresponded to the slight intermittent asthma (4.0%). There were not statistical differences concerning neither age nor sex (p › 0.05).
Discussion. The prevalence was lower than that reported in the literature; however the divergences between the cases reported by parents and medics about the distribution, variation and comportment of asthma in pediatric patients is an impulse to his study.
Conclusion. Although there was no identification of the risk factors associated with asthma in this study, the analysis of their behavior in our country will improve their prevention, diagnosis and treatment.
