ABSTRACT
Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is an acute syndrome with abnormalities
in multiple organ systems. The presenting features are
essentially the same in most patients, beginning with thrombocytopenia
and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia without another apparent
cause; in addition, many patients have neurologic and/or renal
abnormalities, with an incidence of 4.5 cases/million per year. We
present a case of a 52 year old male presented to the emergency
department for eight days with malaise, fatigue, weakness, anorexia,
three days before admission nonspecific abdominal pain, hematemesis
and vomiting of gastric content; the day of admission
shows drowsiness, disorientation, dyslalia and bradylalia. The presence
of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia
without other findings suggest HUS in adult patients.
