ABSTRACT
Introduction: The operative vaginal delivery has been associated to obstetrical trauma. Obstetrical trauma is defined as those injuries that appear during the obstetrical attention either by action or omission and which they can appear in the mother, the fetus or, both. Objective. The objective of the study was to describe and analyze the incidence and prevalence of obstetrical fetal trauma associated to operative vaginal delivery in newborns. Material and methods. Retrospective, transversal, descriptive and analytical study in newborns obtained operative vaginal delivery with obstetrical forceps during January 1st to December 31st 2009 at the Woman‘s Hospital, SSA. Results. A total of 205 newborns obtained through operative vaginal delivery were available of analysis. The 47.8 % (n = 98) were women and 52.2% (n = 107) men. The 6.8 % (n = 14) premature, 88.4% (n = 181) term births, and 4.8% (n = 10) post term. The 9.7% (n = 20) weighed between 1,000 to 2,499 g and 90.3% (n = 185) sym ⊒ 2,500 g. The complications associated to operative vaginal delivery with obstetrical forceps: ecchymosis 25.5% (n = 13), caput succedaneum 16.1% (n = 33), subarachnoid hemorrhage 0.5% (n = 1) and clavicle fracture 1.0% (n = 2). Conclusions. This investigation shows our institutional experience in the attention of the operative vaginal delivery with obstetrical forceps. Our incidence of fetal obstetrical trauma is high compared with the international reports but low or similar to the national reports.REFERENCES
