Evaluation of quality of life in patients underwent reconstruction the bile duct using the SF-36

ABSTRACT
Introduction. The bile duct injury is defined as the tearing or section of it at some point with or without bile leakage. Its incidence ranges from 0.25 to 0.35%. The consequences are catastrophic for both the patient and surgeon. The morbidity included: stricture, portal hypertension and even liver cirrhosis. Objective. To assess the quality of life in patients postoperative biliary reconstruction incidental injury. Material and methods. We assessed the quality of life using the SF-36 version 2.0 applied by telephone to patients postoperative biliary reconstruction incidental injury treated at the Department of Surgery, National Medical Center 20 de Noviembre, ISSSTE , Mexico City, during the period from 1 January 2003 to 1 January 2008. Results. We evaluated 32 patients, 75% (n = 24) women and 25% (n = 8) men. The mean age was 52.4 ± 14.01 years. Results in the SF-36: physical functioning 87.5 ± 16.22 points, role-physical 82.03 ± 23.65 points, bodily pain 55.1 ± 19.98 points, general health 52.32 ± 19.98 points, vitality 68.32 ± 21.94 points, social functioning 70.93 ± 19.53 points, role-emotional 56.33 ± 20.48 points and mental health 70.93 ± 19.82 points. Conclnusions. The patients postoperative biliary reconstruction have good quality of life, with a proper state of physical and mental health that allowed the patient to reintegrate a productive life. To assess the quality of life secondary to surgical procedures is essential to increase the quality of care and patient satisfaction. This study proposes the SF-36 version 2.0 as an assessment tool useful for this purpose.REFERENCES
