ABSTRACT
Retinitis pigmentosa is the most common
retinal dystrophy; the vascular changes
are related to its pathophysiology,
although the damage or circulatory
disorders are not its primary cause. A
descriptive and cross-sectional study was
conducted in the National Reference
Center of Retinitis Pigmentosa, in
Havana, in order to identify the situation
of the peripheral circulation in patients
with retinitis pigmentosa by means of a
carotid Doppler. From a total of 400
patients suffering from this condition a
sample of 158 patients was selected,
after applying the inclusion and exclusion
criteria. The variables age, sex and stage
of the disease were analyzed; the latter
according to the classification of the
Cuban School of Retinitis pigmentosa. All
patients underwent a carotid Doppler.
The results were considered as negative
ones (in the absence of atherosclerotic
plaques and turbulence and permeable
vertebrobasilar system) and pathological
ones (atheromatous plaques, turbulent
flow and stenosis of the vessel lumen
examined or their branches). The data
were processed by descriptive methods
(percentages). The age range more
commonly presented was between 41
and 50 years of age (32.91%), females
predominated (60.12%) and normal
Doppler (68.35%). The highest
percentage of peripheral circulatory
disturbances (32.0) occurred in patients
in stage IV of the disease. Alterations of
the peripheral circulation shown in
carotid Doppler examination of patients
were mainly those from the last stage of
evolution of the disease.
