ABSTRACT
Introduction: alcoholism can promove different non temporary familial crisis harming the whole family efficacy or household members. To study families living with alcoholics and their interactions can provide resourses in healthy life styles promotion and to contribute with strategies of prevention, treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation.Objectives: to identify the relationships among some sociodemographic and psychosocial variables from a group of families living with alcoholic members, the perception of family functioning, the strategies of coping and social support.
Methods: it was developed a quantitative and transversal study at Cayo Hueso neighborhood in Centro Habana from April to September 2010. A sample of 50 families living with male alcoholics answered a questionnaire and the test of family functioning perception.
Results: there were no differences regarding family structure and general housing conditions between families living or not with alcoholics. High frequency of alcoholism family history was found. Greater and more severe perceived family dysfunction in the families living with alcoholics was noticeable and also when matching each alcoholic in pair with his household family. Harmony and cohesion categories affected the most the family functioning.
Conclusions: coping styles prevalent were avoidance, intolerance and confrontation linked to a wide diversity of unpleasant feelings to the alcoholics. The perceived social support showed a diminished family cohesion and the seeking by the dysfunctional families of extrafamilial support networks like self-aid groups, religion institutions and specialists of mental health.
