ABSTRACT
Introduction: To understand regulatory policies or regulatory reform it is necessary to distinguish between two views of their application: the legal and the economic. The offi cial Mexican standards are technical regulations and legal standards that enable government agencies to establish measurable parameters to avoid risks to the population. In the past decade they have become very important in the Mexican legal system. They are issued with a constitutional basis, and determine processes and programs necessary to ensure patient safety and quality of services.Development: In 2007, six new offi cial standards were included in the National Standards Committee for Innovation, Development, and Health Information Technology. They are intended to help ensure that the State is in complete compliance with the safeguards provided by the legal system, enshrined in Article 4 of the Constitution of the United Mexican States; the right to the protection of health.
Conclusions: Regulation through offi cial standards in the area of health is a signifi cant event in Mexico. The aim is to protect the people who are providing care, so they may respond effectively to the health needs of the country. Therefore, we are determined to develop offi cial standards that apply to nursing care.
