Measurement of oxygen consumption during total endovenous anaesthesia and balanced anaesthesia

ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the changes of non invasive measurement of oxygen consumption during intravenous and balanced anaesthesia.
Design: Case series report.
Setting: Anaesthesiology and Pulmonary Physiology Departments of private tertiary care hospital, Mexico City.
Patients: Forty-two ASA I-II patients underwent to elective laparotomy.
Interventions: Twenty patients received propofol and fentanyl in continuous infusion (group I) and twenty patients were managed with sevoflurane plus fentanyl and cisatracurium in continuous infusion (group II). Non Invasive oxygen consumption was measured with a monitor Datex-Ohmeda ASS/3 six times in the both groups.
Measurements and main results: VO2 was at intubation (112 ± 103 vs 145 ± 126.4 mL/min), at the beginning of surgery (89 ± 39.5 vs 95 ± 74.8 mL/min) and during the surgery (110 ± 157.3, 100.5 ± 21.7. 95.2 ± 48.2 and 110 ± 40.2 vs 100 ± 145.6, 130 ± 135.3, 140 ± 132.8, 113 ± 80.2 mL/min), respectively for groups I and II was found (p ‹ 0.01).
Conclusion: A decrease of VO2 can occur in patients managed with balanced anaesthesia.
