ABSTRACT
Hypospadias is a congenital abnormality of the male external genitalia relatively common. It may be due to an isolated defect or the phenotypic expression of a more complex disorder like an intersexual state. It is associated with three anomalies that affect the penis: An abnormal ventral orifice of the urethral meatus, an abnormal ventral curvature of the penis (stringing), abnormal distribution of the foreskin. The arrested development hypothesis is the most plausible and would explain the presence of the typical simultaneous features of the hypospadias. It is important to seek these abnormalities during the assessment of the newborn because their treatment is exclusively surgical.
