ABSTRACT
In Costa Rica, according to the World Health Organization (OMS) one trauma dead is reported in 2004 of 54 of each thousand citizens, while in USA one of each 14 deaths is caused by trauma. Traumas cause more death in people between 1 and 37 years old than any other disease. Of injuries in general, renal trauma represent about 1% -5% of cases, and the kidney is the genitourinary and abdominal organ injured more often. The male: female ratio is 3:1 in these cases. The renal trauma can be life threatening in the short term, depending on the severity and the time between the onset of the injury and making the diagnosis. Renal injuries are classified according to their mechanism of trauma: closed or penetrating. In the past 20 years has reduced the need for surgery and has been on the conservative management increased due to advances in imaging techniques and therapeutic strategies.
