ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the epidemiological traits of poisoning patients seen in the pediatric emergency department of Hospital General «La Raza» in a period of five years.
Methods: An observational study approved by the research committee that analyzed the epidemiological variables of poisoning patients seen in the pediatric emergency department of «La Raza» General Hospital between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2010. We used descriptive statistics with SPSS program v.18.
Results: We included 993 intoxicated patients which corresponded to 0.5% of the consulting service. Seventy one percent were acute poisoning and the peak age was 1-2 years (33.8%). The accidental exposures were 60.5% and 14.6% suicide. The principal point of contact was gastrointestinal (81.2%) and the most frequent xenobiotics were caustic soda and paracetamol. The venue most reported for toxic exposure was home (92.3%). The mean time between exposure to the toxic and medical care was 16.5 hours; 45.9% of the study population came from home. In 30.6% of the cases a specific antidote was administered. Complications occurred in 7.5% of cases. The 71.5% of the series was discharged home and only 2.0% required intensive care.
Conclusions: The frequency of intoxicated patients in this service is high. It would be desirable to be reckoned with adequate resources to provide the care that these patients require.
