ABSTRACT
The present study evaluated the economic, academic and social conditions in a sample of 176 freshmen (50% of the total registration) in a university located in the northwest of México. A package of evaluation composed by seven sections was administered to participants: 1) socio-demographic data, 2) academic path, 3) level of knowledge about the discipline, 4) dominion of software, 5) general culture, 6) aptitude for science and 7) reading comprehension in English language. Results are discussed in comparison with an equivalent sample with a similar curriculum in an institution located in Mexico City.
