History of the Pathology Department of the Dental School of Havana in the 1965-1972 period

ABSTRACT
The department of pathology of the Dental School of the Medical Sciences University of Havana has played an important role in the formation of dental professionals since its foundation. Its work has been directed to scientific, technical and assistance training related with diagnostic media, including clinical oral pathology. The objectives of this paper was to make a historical account of the development of the department, in a first stage from its creation in 1965 to 1972 and to highlight the most important facts and achievements in this period. To this end, books and related documents covering the history of the department were consulted as well as founding professors and other professionals who have worked for over 30 years in the institution were interviewed. Among the main achievements was the consolidation of a Department which integrated several subjects that previously were taught separately. In was concluded that the Department of Pathology, founded the 10th of December 1965, built a sound educational, assistance and research unit with subjects related with diagnostic media such as Pathological Anatomy, Radiology, Microbiology and Clinical Oral Pathology; additionally, a pathology laboratory and an oral pathology clinic were created for the first time in dentistry.
