ABSTRACT
Cleft palate patients show compensatory articulation disorder. This disorder severely affects speech intelligibility and requires a prolonged period of speech therapy. It can be considered a phonologic disorder. This implies that articulation errors are related not only to phonological knowledge, but also to higher organizational levels of language processing. It is necessary to treat both, speech and language problems in a related way. If these principles are considered during speech therapy, the treatment could be more effective. This work describes the speech and language problems patients with cleft palate can develop and the way to assess and treat those problems during speech therapy in an integral way.
