ABSTRACT
Deep vein thrombosis of the upper extremities is a rare entity (1 out of 25 cases of vein thrombosis). When cancer is present, it accounts for 30% of all the cases of deep vein thrombosis of upper limbs. Main signs and symptoms are pain, erythema and edema. Doppler ultrasound is the diagnostic imaging technique of choice and the treatment it is similar to the one used for deep vein thrombosis of the lower limbs. We presented the case of sixty years-old man, who was seen at the emergency department and complained of having edema, pain and collateral circulation of the left upper extremity for three days. Doppler ultrasound confirmed the diagnosis of jugular and subclavian vein thrombosis; additionally, the physical examination found a tumor mass in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen; and finally the colonoscopy with biopsy diagnosed highly malignant filtrating colorectal adenocarcinoma of the right colon. The patient was treated with anticoagulants as low-molecular-weight heparin and operated on from tumor perforation. Two months later, he died at home.REFERENCES
