ABSTRACT
Background: due to aging increasing population, hip fracture is a health problem of major proportions. Adequate surgical treatment is the cornerstone to avoid complications and to return the patient to the activities carried out previously.
Objective: to show the behavior of a group of patients operated on this disease.
Method: an observational, analytical, cross section study was performed in 201 patients diagnosed as having hip fracture and treated by surgery in the University Hospital Manuel Ascunce Domenech in Camagüey city, from January to December 2011.
Results: Female patients outnumbered male patients in the ratio of 2, 4 to 1. In the majority of patients (91%), surgery was carried out before 24 hours. The 30, 3 % of patients showed some kind of complication. Factors related to complicated patients and that showed statistical significance had a hospital stay longer than three days, were female patients and underwent surgery after 24 hours.
Conclusions: delayed surgery further than 24 hours and hospital stay more than three days were related to a greater number of complications in patients with hip fracture.
