ABSTRACT
Introduction: The health of mothers is a determinant in the health of children neonatal morbidity and mortality depend on the quality of care they received during their pregnancies, including maternal diseases are preeclampsia, obstetric hemorrhage, heart disease, maternal gestational diabetes and so on. Having complications due to various organ systems of the newborn.
Objective: Determine morbidity and mortality of the newborn child of a mother in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the Hospital of Gynecology and Obstetrics IMIEM, gender, weight, Apgar score, weeks of gestation, number of exploits, breast pathology, services that were entered, organ system complications, length of stay and cause of discharge.
Material and methods: Data were collected on the sheet previously designed for the study and responses were coded for the production database for subsequent statistical analysis software SPSS for Windows version 17. Descriptive statistics were obtained; the results are presented in tables and graphs.
Results: The total population of the study was 231 newborns critically ill mothers, of whom 138 were healthy newborns, and 93 were patients, female gender was more prevalent in 51.9%, the path of birth was a cesarean section 84.8%, the most common-minute Apgar score was 7-10, the most frequent maternal pathology preeclampsia 79.6%, the most common respiratory disease was 20.3 hyaline membrane disease with application of exogenous surfactant, the length of stay were 1-224 were discharged six days for improvement and seven patients for death that is 3%.
Conclusions: As the world literature of pathology that affects mothers is preeclampsia, and major complications in these mothers were hyaline membrane disease and intrauterine growth restriction, we saw a patient preterm generates more costs and more days hospital stay, hyaline membrane disease warrants application of exogenous surfactant, the sooner was the discharge prognosis was better, stay longer generated more sequels.
