Educational intervention to train adolescents on sexually transmitted infections

ABSTRACT

Objective: To raise the level of knowledge about sexually transmitted infections and its prevention in adolescents, by implementing an educational intervention. Methods: A pre-experimental intervention study with a before-after design by means of an integrating strategy with adolescents coming from the 34 and 35 Medical Offices which belong to Policlínico Docente Norte de Placetas from January to March 2009, to demonstrate the influence of educational intervention on knowledge about sexually transmitted infections, was performed. 20 out of 48 adolescents made up the non-random sample (opinion sampling method or purposive sampling), we chose. Different techniques were used: knowledge test, survey, interview and participant-observation. Results: After the educational techniques were put into practice, the level of knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases (evaluated as, “wide”, “minimum” and “null”) showed a substantial improvement, especially in the “wide” category (80 %). Conclusions: Adolescents who participated in the study had insufficient knowledge with regard to prevention before the intervention because they reported that they were not prepared to protect themselves; educational intervention positively influenced on knowledge acquisition and on the prevention of these infections.
