ABSTRACT
Introduction: In the year 2000, the implantation of catgut for postoperative analgesic purposes in multiple exodontias or with certain degree of difficulty, began to be used. Afterwards, this way of proceeding was extended to different types of surgeries in which excellent results could be proved.
Objective: To study the effectiveness of pre-surgical acupuncture application for postoperative analgesia in major surgeries.
Methods: An evaluation of sanitary technology was conducted in 236 patients who underwent four types of interventions after receiving acupuncture implantation.
Results: The effectiveness was measured by the immediate postoperative analgesia which was satisfactory in 85,3 % of patients and the mediate one in 89,4 % of all who were operated on; intraoperative bleeding level remained at a low level(70 %) and postoperative hematuria level in patients who underwent prostatectomy was 75,4 %; immediate postoperative edema had a minimal presence in the 90 % of patients who underwent surgery on their face and mouth as well as mediate postoperative edema in 92,8 % of patients. Once the results obtained with acupuncture and conventional procedures were compared, we found a significantly favorable effectiveness in patients who underwent implantation with respect to the ones who did not undergo implantation. The technical and social scientific impact was satisfactory.
Conclusions: The methodology for assessing the effectiveness of surgical analgesia by implantation of catgut used in this research, proved to be suitable for their intended use in the context of our province. The technique was effective in achieving the desired effects. It is a suitable and valuable technique to be used in special situations requiring mass medical care with limited resources.
