ABSTRACT
In the last 20 years, nitric oxide NO has proven to be a universal
molecular messenger essential in multiple physiological functions
of diversely tissues, including bone. In bone, NO is produced
by nitric oxide synthase (NOS) which exists in three isomorphs:
endothelial, neuronal and inducible nitric oxide synthase NOSe,
NOSn, and NOSi, respectively, each one with specific functions.
This review describes the importance of each NOS isomorph for
bone tissue, as well as the controversy surrounding the action of
NO in bone produced endogenously by these isomorphs and
organic NO donors.
