ABSTRACT
Introduction: The states of south of Mexico, Veracruz, Colima, Queretaro, Guerrero, Campeche, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco, Yucatan and Quitana Roo present the greatest numbers of cervical cancer (CaCu) cases. Every year 4,600 women are diagnosed with CaCu and 4,380 of them died. Objective: Determine the risk factors to develop CaCu in patients attended by the State Center of Cancerology in the city of Xalapa, Veracruz, during the period 2008-2009. Material and methods: a study of cases and controls was realized, a questionnaire was applied to patients with and without CaCu, in order to identify the characteristics of the population and risk factors. Results: of the total of studied individuals (90), 30 were patient with CaCu (cases) and 60 without CaCu (controls). The average of the age was in both groups 41.08 years. The histological classification of the type of cancer was: invading cancer 77%, endometrial adenocarcinoma 13%, cancer in situ 7% and microinvading cancer 3%. Conclusions: the following variables were identified as risk factor: the beginning active sexual life before the 16 years with an OR of 3.76; the number of sexual pairs equal or greater of two, with an OR of 19.6, and the non-use of contraceptive methods with an OR of 9.67.REFERENCES
