The hematopoietic system in chronic, severe, anemia. Analysis and reflections of an experimental model

ABSTRACT
Animal models have played key roles in the study of hematopoiesis, both under normal conditions and under physiological stress. One
such a model was characterized, during the 1970s and 1980s, by Dr. Jaime Martínez Medellín and his group at the Faculty of Sciences of
the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). The work of Martínez Medellín and colleagues contributed to our understanding
of the response of the hematopoietic system under conditions of severe and chronic blood loss. Their integral approach –including biochemical,
cellular and physiological aspects of the hematopoietic response- gave important and novel information regarding the biology
of the hematopoietic system in mammals. The purpose of this article is to present an overview of such an animal model and to describe
some of the major contributions of Dr. Martínez Medellín.
