ABSTRACT
The illnesses of the locomotor apparatus are often causes of disability or death and hip fractures are among them.
Objective: to determine the behavior of hip fracture in the aged in our community.
Method: a longitudinal descriptive study was carried out, the universe matched the sample, 92 patients who underwent surgery for hip fracture in the Provincial Hospital and at "Martín Chang Puga" General Teaching hospital in Nuevitas in a five-year period, they were assisted in the community.
Results: most of the patients were between the ages of 70 and 89 with a predominance of females in a ratio of 6.6:1. Osteoporosis was the most relevant related illness and inflammatory pneumopathy predominated over the other postoperative complications. A high mortality rate of this illness (41.3 %) was observed and 32.6 % of patients died before a year after the operation. Inflammatory pneumopathy and heart diseases are among the leading causes of death, only 44,4 % of autopsies was performed. 68,4 % of the patients were able to walk within a period of 3 to 6 months after the operation.
Conclusion: surgical treatment and rigid and stable fixation should be performed in the first 24 hours. Early mobilization and prompt walking after rehabilitation process would avoid complications, thus integrating these patients into our community again.
