Características clínico-epidemiológicas de la degeneración macular relacionada con la edad en un área de salud

ABSTRACT
The involute macular degeneration is important cause of visual disability in the elderly, Methods: Descriptive study and traverse in 230 older people of the area of health “Héroes de Girón” with diagnosis of this illness during the year 2007 with the objective of identifying the clinical and epidemic characteristics of the same one as cause of visual disability. The variable age, sex, color of the skin, civil state, occupation, academic level, personal and family systemic pathological antecedents, antecedents pathological family oculars, symptoms, corrected visual acuity and form clinic of the macular degeneration were analyzed. Results: prevailed the patients between 70 and 79 years (73,91%), the women (66,08%) and the white skin (65,21%). More than the half they were married or with stable relationships (56,52%), 62,61% was retired and 50,43% had primary level. Among the systemic personal antecedents the bone-muscle-joint dysfunctions prevailed (70,0%) and among the relatives, systemic and ocular, the arterial hypertension (80,43%) and the myopia (35,21%). The most frequent symptom was blurred vision (73,91%), 42,17% of the older people classified as weak visual moderate and in 49,77% the illness was in phase of maculophaty. Conclusions: The advanced age, the feminine sex and the white skin were the characteristics more represented in the studied sample, as well as the vascular illnesses, with hereditary bias and the lightest clinical forms of the macular degeneration with important visual repercussion.
