ABSTRACT
Objective: apply a health education strategy in patients with Diabetes mellitus type 2 who attend The Family Medicine Unit No. 20 (fmu) of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (imss), in order to improve their knowledge of hypoglycemic drugs and therefore the therapeutic adherence and glycemic control. Material and methods: a quasi-experimental study in which 20 patients with Diabetes mellitus type 2, from both shifts, participated. It was applied a questionnaire with prior informed consent, at the beginning and at the end of the strategy. The questionnaire asked about sociodemographic aspects, adherence to drug therapy, level of knowledge about drugs, and there were recorded glucose numbers in fast of the last three months. Results: the study group noted an age of more than 60 years (85%), 50% men and 50% women; 60% married, 20% widow/widower, 55% retired, 35% dedicated to their home, and 60% with elementary school educational level. The level of knowledge about hypoglycemic medicines before the strategy was less than 60%, with an average of 1.12, and eventually at the end of the strategy it improved up to 60% and an optimal of 40%, with an average of 1.55 (p=0.000). Before the strategy, it was observed a therapeutic adherence of 10%, and later, of 80%, as well as an initial glycemic control of 30% and at the end of 85%. Conclusions: participants whom an educational strategy was implemented significantly increased their knowledge about hypoglycemic medicines, with greater therapeutic adherence and an improvement in glycemic control.REFERENCES
