ABSTRACT
Objective: to demonstrate the effectiveness of the therapy in solving
problems (TSP) in patients with physical symptoms, which cannot
medically be explained (SCME).
Methods: a randomized experimental
study applied to 80 patients with scme, who were divided into two sets:
experimental group (EG) and control group (CG), which were analyzed
before and after the intervention. The tsp was applied to the EG, while
the cg was applied a traditional medical approach. It was used the SPSS
19 program for Windows, as well as tests of U Mann-Whitney for a
basal and final comparison of both groups,
and the Friedman test to compare the response
in terms of the intensity and duration
of symptoms.
Results: there was a loss of
five patients (four of the cg and one of the
EG) from a total of 80. Of the 75 studied patients,
73.8% was female; most of them with
higher educational level and an age range of
18 to 65 years. Abdominal pain was the most
frequent type of consultation, with 47.5%.
The EG showed greater decrease of intensity
(Mann-Whitney Z=-2.898; p=0.004) and
duration of unspecific symptoms (Mann-
Whitney Z=3.431; p=0.001) that the CG.
Conclusions: a somatization disorder like
the TSP decreases the intensity and duration
of the illness in patients with SCME.
