Phyllodes Tumor of the Breast: a 32 Years Study

ABSTRACT

Background: phyllodes tumor of the breast is rare. It presents a fibroepithelial origin with aggressive potential. It represents from 0,3 % to 0,4 % of all breast tumors and from 2,5 % to 3 % of epithelial tumors in that organ.
Objective: to characterize, from a clinical and pathological point of view, the phyllodes tumors operated in the province of Cienfuegos during 32 years.
Methods: a descriptive, prospective and observational study was conducted from January 1st, 1980 to 31st, December 2011, including 89 patients who received a five years annual follow-up each along the 32 years of the study at the Dr. Gustavo Aldereguía Lima General University Hospital of Cienfuegos. The patients operated in the province were examined in Mastology Consultation before surgery and received the previously referred follow-up. The variables analyzed were age, anatomic location, tumor size, type of tumor and municipality of origin.
Results: the highest amount of cases was detected in patients over 40 years old. In this period, the sole cases of phyllodes tumors in girls and teenagers were reported and operated in Cienfuegos. According to the nature of the tumor, 98.8% had a benign origin. Conclusions: phyllodes tumor of the breast has a low incidence in the province of Cienfuegos, and 98,8 % of them present a benign nature.
