ABSTRACT
Objective: To review the health implications of the interaction between type 2 diabetes and tuberculosis.
Material and methods: we reviewed the papers registered in Pubmed on this subject during the last 10 years.
Results: Type 2 diabetes is the main health problem in Mexico. The national prevalence was 14.4% in adults over 20 years old. It is the main cause of premature disability, blindness, kidney failure and amputations. On the other hand, 30-40% of the Mexican adult population is infected with
Mycobacterium tuberculosis and therefore at risk of developing tuberculosis reactivation. Diabetes triples the risk of developing tuberculosis. Diabetes can decrease the effectiveness of preventive actions of active tuberculosis since it facilitates infection of recent acquisition and reactivation of latent forms.
Conclusions: The systematic search for diabetes in all patients with tuberculosis is required. The coexistence of these diseases can have an undesirable effect on the number of cases with such diseases and the severity of infection with
Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
