ABSTRACT
The classification of Cuban medical journals according to the geographical origin of most of the authors hinders their development under the present conditions of scientific and technological advancement of the country. The evolutions, current status as well as academic and material perspectives of Cuban medical journals are analyzed. Cuban medical journals reach a new phase of development, starting from the possibility of obtaining a technological, access and initial academic equality. A large number of these journals have migrated or are migrating to Open Journal System, a technology platform for the electronic publication of scientific journals of proven quality and a high number of users worldwide. Currently, Cuba published nearly 30 medical journals in SciELO methodology, 20 of them appear on Scopus, the world's largest multidisciplinary database of refereed literature, which is not the case with journals published in other formats. More than 40 Cuban medical journals hold CITMA seal, certification awarded by the Academy of Sciences of Cuba to journals deemed to meet the requirements to be considered scientific and technological journals. It is possible to obtain equality between the academic journals in the health sector in the country, which depends largely on the work of authors, referees and editors of each, and the support they receive from the scientific and management authorities of institutions and entities that are subordinate.
