ABSTRACT
Backgrounds: The diagnosis of pulmonary thromboembolism is one of the most difficult challenges for clinicians due to the lack of sensitivity and specificity of signs and symptoms.
Objectives: Analyze the epidemiological variables in cases attended at Clinical Services of V. I. Lenin Hospital, who died due to pulmonary thromboembolism.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at V. I Lenin Teaching Hospital was performed. The research comprised 41 patients who died at clinical services of this institution in 2010 because of thromboembolism diagnosis. Variables of interest such as age, sex, main cause of death, hospital demurrage and index of autopsies were evaluated.
Results: there was a higher incidence in male patients older than seventy years representing 63.5%. The main causes of death were the vascular ones (41.4%) followed by inflammatory lung disease (21.9%). The hospital demurrage was superior to twenty days in 56% of patients. The index of necropsies was of appropriate.
Conclusions: The epidemiological variables such age, sex, basic cause of death and hospital demurrage incidence were similar to those reported by other authors. In this hospital the index of autopsies was appropriate.
