ABSTRACT
Objective: to describe the study design of a prospective cohort to identify the impact of motor, non-motor and
genetic factors on the progression and frequency of complications in Mexican patients with Parkinson’s disease.
Methods: the design, calculation of sample size, primary and secondary objectives, recruitment strategy, clinimetric
scales to apply and its justification, genetic studies and ethical implications of the study protocol are promptly
described.
Results: Between January and December of 2011 several preliminary studies were carried out to assess
the feasibility and identify technical and methodological issues. During this stage, preliminary information of 773
patients with Parkinson’s disease was captures.
Conclusions: The multicenteric cohort study will provide valuable
information on motor, non-motor and genetic factors specific to Mexican population and its impact on disease
progression.
