Congenital syphilis. Presentation of a case and review of the literature

ABSTRACT

The syphilis is an infectocontagious disease caused by Treponema pallidum and its divided in first phase, second phase, latent and third phase. The neurosyphilis and congenital syphilis are considered individual forms, because the last one is transfer from the pregnant women to the infant across the transplacentary circulation. The mortality occurs in the 40% of the total infected newborn. Seventy five percent occurs in uterus and 25% a postnatal life. The clinical manifestations are different and can be asymptomatic disease or they can provoke the death in uterus or in a neonatal period. The clinical manifestation are considered early if they are presented before two years old, and later if they appears after this age. We describe a case of congenital syphilis in a newborn, male with a multisistemic affectation, diagnosticated by clinic historical, clinical manifestations and nontreponemal test positive in blood and cerebrospinal fluid, in the last one, we observed an increase of the number of cells. The treatment was with penicillin G a dose of 100,000 UI kg divided every 12 hours for 21 days, with adequate response and remission of disease.
