ABSTRACT
Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is defined as a behavioral syndrome of neurobiological origin mainly
characterized by symptoms of inattention and/or impulsivity-hyperactivity. According to DSM-IV there are subtypes that
specify the presentation of the predominant symptom: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and
combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive. The prevalence of ADHD is 3%-7% in school-age children, without an accurate
data of its prevalence in adolescence and young adults. The ADHD manifest itself in academic, work and social environment.
These patients often have difficulty sustaining attention in work or leisure activities, which makes them hard to finish a task. In
the case of children and adolescents the diagnosis must be based on information obtained from parents and teachers.
