ABSTRACT
Hydrocephalus is defined as an increase in cerebrospinal fluid total volume inside the cranial cavity as a consequence of an imbalance between its production and reabsorption, which leads to a size augment of the spaces that contains it. It can be congenital or acquired, communicant or noncommunicant. It could be presented as an acute illness with a few hours of evolution or a chronic evolution, with their own clinical characteristics and specific treatment, resulting in impaired psychomotor and cognitive development. Treatment can be medical or surgical, being the last one the gold standard, which is offered in order to improve or even have a total recuperation of the disease. The most frequent procedure is the colocation of a derivation valve; however, there is a possibility of complications, being the most frequent the colonization of the drainage system in anyplace, principally by
Staphylococcus epidermidis,
Staphylococcus aureus and
Staphylococcus viridans.
