ABSTRACT
The surgical treatment of the primary pterygium constitutes an achievement of the ophthalmological care in Bolivia, given its high prevalence and the difficulty for the patients' access. A descriptive, retrospective and longitudinal study was conducted in 397 patients who had complications after primary pterygium surgery in the Ophthalmological Center of the Department of Chuquisaca, Bolivia during the year 2009, with the objective of identifying the complications and their relationship with clinical-epidemic factors. The variables analyzed were: age, sex, occupation, origin, complications according to the surgical technique carried out and the grade and anatomical localization of pterygium. The data were analyzed in percentages. Among the patients with complications, there was a prevalence of those between 40 and 49 years of age (31.48%), males (64.48%), farmers (26.44%), of rural origin (69.01%). Among the complications, there was a prevalence of the relapse (39.29%), mainly associated to the simple exceresis (25.94%), and the complications among patients with pterygium grade IV of internal localization (27.70%). The data of the series coincide with the reports in the literature and are related to the characteristics of the type of patients operated and the social context where the investigation was conducted. The most frequent complications (relapse, dehiscence of suture and granuloma, in the case of the exceresis with auto-implant, and relapse and symblepharon linked to simple exceresis) were associated with factors like the grade of the pterigyum, the type of surgery carried out and the presence of social conditions as occupation and origin, which prevented a correct postoperative recovery.REFERENCES
