Perineal necrotizing fasciitis: Fournier Gangrene

ABSTRACT

The necrotizing fasciitis is a progressive and potentially fatal infection of the soft-tissues, it is known as Fournier Gangrene when it affects the perineum, the scrotum or the perianal area. It is present frequently in patients with diseases compromising the immune system, e.g. diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, cancer, conditioning the infectious process to develop rapidly and might extend to the abdominal wall and/or the pelvic limbs. Reason the treatment requires an early surgical intervention with and aggressive and wide debridation on the infected soft-tissues, as well as hemodynamic, metabolic and appropriate antibiotics support; however, despite of the best therapeutic measures, the mortality rate reports a 20-40%.
