Fatty acids: cancer's friends or foes?

ABSTRACT
Cancer is the uncontrolled cell growth, originated by diverse etiological factors. Fats have been contraindicated during
pharmacological therapy against cancer, including some fatty acids that have proved beneficial results in intervention researches
for the cancer treatment. The polyunsaturated fatty acids are associated to the significantly reduction on the incidence of
proliferation of malignant melanomas, through the suppression of the cyclooxigenase-2 expression in tumors, the
diminishment of AP-1 and RAS expression, the promotion of cancerous cell differentiation, malignant cell apoptosis and the
decrease of cachexia. Within our population exists a deficient ingestion of these nutrients whether the cancer pathology
develops or not.
