ABSTRACT
Background: An increase of unsuitable consultations referral by dentists of primary heath care to the services of orthodontics could be related to insufficiencies in the process of development of abilities on orthodontics during undergraduate formation. Objective: To evaluate particular abilities on orthodontics in 4th year dentistry students. Methodology: A descriptive study was carried out in the University of Medical Sciences of Sancti SpÃritus from September 2011 to February 2012, with 54 students and 9 professors. The variables number of times in which the ability is assessed, grade given to the development of abilities and perception by professors and students when concluding the subject. Results: The majority of the abilities per topic were graded as Good or Excellent but there are still difficulties in the diagnosis per topic of the dentomaxillofacial anomalies diagnosis and bone teeth discrepancy; professors identify the lowest levels of appropriation per topics and the students in the abilities of the diagnosis of the anomalies mentioned above. Conclusions: Favorable results were observed in the process of appropriation of abilities particularly on orthodontics but there are still insufficiencies which demand the application of didactic proposals for its transformation.REFERENCES
