ABSTRACT
Background: The idea of death has changed in the different eras, at moment is accepted that the brain death determines the legal death
of a person. In this review we analyzed definition, pathophysiology, clinical criteria and techniques for confirmatory declare brain death.
Material and methods: It was conducted a literature search in the databases of Medline, Pubmed, Artemisa and LILACs from 1980 to
2012, for search were introduced the following words:
Guidelines brain death, ancillary testing brain death; in addition it were included
classic texts and articles more ancient.
Conclusions: At the present death of the brain is legally accepted as the culmination of the life, the diagnosis of brain death is essentially
clinical, ancillary testing are of great help, but by themselves do not establish the diagnosis of brain death. The opportunity of diagnosis
will also help the transplant programs should be strengthened.
